Codeine, one ingredient in “Lean” is an opiate similar to : Heroin, Morphine, Oxycontin or Vicodin. We’ve coined Lean as, “Hip-Hop’s New Heroin”. Not a good look by the way, if you’ve ever seen a heroin addict.
Some of the biggest supporters of this drink seem to be the ones who have died at the mercy of this drink. DJ Screw, died of a codeine–promethazine–alcohol overdose in 2000. Big Moe, a DJ Screw protégé, who rapped excessively about this drink died at age 33 in 2007, after suffering a heart attack one week earlier that left him in a coma.
In 2007, Pimp C died from complications of Sleep Apnea after drinking Lean.
Codeine is not as addictive as Heroin, but once addicted, the withdrawal symptoms mirror those of a Heroin addiction.
The two active ingredients Codeine & Promethazineare are both Central Nervous System Depressants, diminish your breathing capacity, which is why people feel that “good feeling” or that euphoria.
However, sometimes it slows the system down so much that a person stops breathing and dies.
April 2012 Schoolboy Q revealed that he quit sipping on Lean and is trying to get A$AP Rocky to follow his lead.
The duo created the popular hit, “Hands on the Wheel.”
Schoolboy Q said he quit after he drank some Lean and passed out, then woke up breathing heavily due to his complications with asthma: “I don’t know if it was a near-death experience but it felt like I was about to die.
I’ve been going through withdrawals… It’s like somebody’s grabbing your stomach… and just holding it.”
In the interview with AngieMartinez he clearly should be in rehab, but even if it is destroys his sex life and his musical ability, he still chooses the lean. Every drug addict says, “I can quit, when I want…”
Symptoms of Lean include body temperature increasing at a high rate, rigid muscle activity, disorientation, abnormal or irregular heartbeat and sweating and epileptic fits.
Lean is a bandwagon drug that everyone in a crew usually experiment with their entourage. No one wants to be out of the loop and adults suffer from peer pressure too.
I am convinced that if Jay Z made a song about Clorox and sprite, people would drink that too.
That is why we have a million people posing with their double cups with self-glorification and ultimately grinning in a video glamorizing the deadly toxic.
Rappers are not obligated to act as male mentors, but if a teen is lacking a permanent male, they mimic images and behavior.
They believe they can leave the projects and reach fame by jumping on every new gimmick.
The weak minded need acceptance, but the “genius child” also can fall short, by their own addictions, just like Jean Michel Basquiat.
Rehab doesn’t work if as soon as you leave rehab you go back to the same friends you were leaning with in the beginning of your addiction.
The harsh reality remains you may consume Lean for years without any injury or near death experience until one day you can’t wake up…
