During the 1980’s Michael Stewart a 25-year-old black man would tag and scribble ideas and pictures on walls as a form of expression .He was in Police Custody when he was brutally beaten and died 13 days later. The police defense was that he resisted arrest .Three witnesses saw that he was handcuffed, while he was beat.He had no way to defend himself against the fatal blows.
The 198o’s Graffiti Art Movement breeded some of the best artist of all time Lady Pink, Keith Haring,Lady Pink, Jean Michel Basquiat and Al Diaz (SAMO). Michael Stewart wanted to join the ranks of the Graffitii Elite. Many paid tribute to his death.Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring were deeply upset with his death and painted portraits in Michael’s honor.
Michael Stewart entered the hospital and lived the last 13 days of his life in a Coma. His injuries and witness reports stated that he was strangled and pummeled to death.Later in the investigation the Coroner report later disappeared. The New York Transit Police also taped his legs together while he was handcuffed. The sadness and a silence of injustice breeds contempt were the police strengthened doubt in police protection. The Graffiti world lost a young man,and all the Policemen pleaded not guilty and were acquitted of all charges. http://www.nytimes.com/1985/11/25/nyregion/jury-acquits-all-transit-officers-in-1983-death-of-michael-stewart.html?scp=1&sq=%22michael+stewart%22+jury+white&st=nyt&pagewanted=all . Power Struggles and Fears create separation.http://nyminute.blog.arte.tv/2010/08/19/michael-stewart/ The same fact remains that it takes someone to die before we remember fear, brutality, and ignorance. Trayvon and Sean Bell, and many others have died in the custody of police. Maybe, they have a reason to run? Fear and distrust, just to name a few. Who could be this cruel? Why are we living in a world with so much injustice? What can we do to end this senseless brutality? This should not happen. No excuse!
